Sustainability

We care about people and the planet, and we know they are connected.

Sustainability is an issue that can’t be ignored in Kenya, where the chopping down of trees to make charcoal not only increases the severity of droughts, but also causes health problems for the people making it.

Keeping water clean and pollutant-free is an admirable goal anywhere, but the impact is visible in the people who get sick from the nearby Haha River, which is sadly full of human and animal waste.

Rafiki works with students and their families to educate them about environmental issues.

We help people find alternate sources of income so they can stop making charcoal from precious trees, and we teach students to plant and care for new trees. Read more about what we are doing with clean water and food sustainability.
